Cotton's Interview with a Photographer: Geoffrey Yuen

We love discovering and following fresh talent in the photography world! Vancouverite Geoffrey Yuen is pretty new to the photography game, having only picked up his first DSLR in early 2015.  With no professional training, he quickly caught the bug and decided to pursue his passion as a full-time career.

We spoke to Yuen for our latest instalment of our "Interview with a photographer" series.

Cotton Carrier: Where do you call home?

Geoffrey Yuen: Without a doubt Vancouver. I have lived on the North Shore my entire life and through photography, I have really been able to see Vancouver from angles I never thought were possible.

CC: How would you define your style as a photographer?

GY: Although I shoot everything from portraits to events to travel, I guess Urban Architecture/Landscape photography would best describe my style. Lines, I love using lines in my photos.

CC: Where is your favourite place or thing to shoot?

GY: Anywhere with good lighting. Recently, I have been really enjoying product photography too.

CC: What Camera(s) / Lenses do you use?

GY: Atm I have a Nikon D610 and a 14mm f2.8, 24mm f1.8, 50mm f1.4, 24-70mm f2.8, 70-200 f2.8.

CC: What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to get “The Shot”?

GY: Sneaking into a subway tunnel in Tokyo. (Seen above.)

CC: Who has inspired you as a photographer?

GY: Kanye West, Anton (@mellowedhigh), Ryan Millier (@ryanmillier), Vanic

CC: What advice would you tell an aspiring photographer?

GY: The only way to get better is to shoot more and the best way to shoot more is to bring your camera around with you everywhere you go. Also don't stress too much about shooting in what mode.. photography is all about composition and post.

CC: Can you share a photographic resource you personally use?

GY: Youtube. Some of the channels are wack but for the most part, you'll learn something from everybody.

CC: How has photography shaped your day-to-day?

GY: My schedule is never the same and if it's a nice day I most likely will drop all my responsibilities to go out and shoot.

CC: Where has photography taken you, and what has it made you experience?

GY: Literally everything. Since taking photography seriously last year I have travelled over 10 cities, attended massive music festivals, and on top of the biggest skyscrapers. As well it has made me appreciate architecture and clouds so much more.

CC: Any photographic events in coming up you’d like to share?

I'll be going to Toronto/New York again during the Winter season to get those crazy snow shots. As well, I have been meaning to visit Australia since I have many friends there and the landscape there is incredible. Stuttgart Germany is another place I must go, the architecture there is on another level and I have never been to Europe before.
